A Message to Unite Members

I am pleased to welcome you to the 2020/21 Unite Education Programme for the West Midlands Region. Inside you will find the wide range of courses that are available to you as a Unite Representative.

The extraordinary events we have seen unfold during the coronavirus pandemic have emphasised the vital role trade unions play. The crucial lobbying of government to ensure vital wage provision for both workers and the self-employed has made clear the importance of Unite’s political role in maintaining a strong voice for those we represent. The tireless work of our Health & Safety and Workplace Reps has driven best practice in managing the welfare of the workforce during the pandemic, putting people before profit. There is no doubt that without the actions of Unite Reps many more workers would not have had enhanced furlough pay, adequate provision of personal protective equipment, or safer working practices implemented. Huge challenges will remain as the impact of the crisis continues to be felt across all sectors of the economy and our Reps will have a pivotal role in ensuring our members do not disproportionately shoulder the burden of this.

Our elected Reps are our greatest asset and never has this been more clearly demonstrated. Our education programme must continue to provide the appropriate training to support you in carrying out your role in both the workplace and the wider community. Education will continue to adapt to whatever circumstances we find ourselves in.The Coronavirus crisis has meant the Union is having to adapt quickly to continue supporting our members and activists to the same high standards, but in different and innovative ways.

To keep you and our employees’ safe and well during these extremely challenging times, Unite Education is moving in the short term, to online delivery. From now until December 2020 we are moving our courses into virtual classrooms; training will take place using the video conferencing software that lockdown has made us all very familiar with.

This academic year 2020/21 will also take in the triennial Reps elections with the education programme offering the necessary training for new reps.  The brochure covers courses for 2020/21. We will add to and amend the programme during the year to reflect circumstances and demand so please look out for announcements and keep an eye on our website at

https://west-midlands.unitetheunion.org/education/courses-for-reps

Unite education courses will provide you with the organising skills, knowledge and tools to fight back to win better terms and conditions in the workplace for the members you represent, grow our union and retain members.

Our courses are run by experienced tutors in a supportive learning environment where members share their own experiences and knowledge, and learn from each other. They are all fully accredited and you will be expected to complete the course work with support from your tutor and other Reps.

Please note that from September to December we are offering the Workplace Reps 1A and 1B and Health and Safety Reps 1A and 1B together with the 5 day Mental Health Awareness and Equalities’ courses. We are hoping to add further dates for the advanced courses as we progress. Details of changes will be notified on Unite’s regional website and social media as well as emailed to you.

The cornerstone of our regional provision is the Unite Workplace Representative Introductory Certificate Course that you need to complete over 10 days (two 5 day blocks), followed by the Bargaining & the Law Part 1 and 2. For more experienced reps and those who have completed the 20 day Introductory ones there is the Workplace Reps 2A and 2B.

For Health and Safety Representatives we offer a 20 day training package split into 4 modules of 5 days each.

We also offer a 5 day Equality and Diversity course for all Reps and our 5 day Mental Health Awareness course continues to be popular.  You will usually have to have completed the Workplace Reps or Health and Safety Reps 1A and 1B courses before applying for these popular courses.

We no longer offer the 2 day Mental Health First Aid course as it is your employer’s responsibility to offer this.

In addition to the courses for our Workplace Representatives, Health and Safety Representatives, Equality Representatives and Union Learning Representatives, we can also run bespoke courses and bite size education upon request. Please contact your regional officer or the education department if you wish to pursue this.

Our courses are run by experienced tutors in a supportive learning environment where members share their own experiences and knowledge, and learn from each other. They are all fully accredited and you will be expected to complete the course work with support from your tutor and other Reps.
